Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs is getting ready for more lanes

Since I’m almost a native of Colorado Springs and have lived in the area for over 32 years, I’m very excited that Interstate 25 is finally getting more northbound lanes.  Seems to me that this Colorado Springs Trafficeshould have been 20 years ago, but then what do I know.  As my mother used to say, better late than never!

The widening project will span I-25 between north Colorado Springs and Monument.   It will add one lane in each direction of I-25 between Woodmen Road in Colorado Springs and State Highway 105 in Monument, which is about 11 miles.  Since I drive this road most days, I’m very hopeful that it will ease some of the traffic on this stretch of the road.   The interstate is THE major road for north south traffic through the city, and some estimate that it carries over 25% of the daily traffic.

The project is scheduled to begin early March 2013.    It’s a $66.4 million project, called @i25expansion; and you can find more information about the project at the Colorado Department of Transportation’s web site.  The contractor who is doing the project is Kiewitt Construction.

Also, there’s also a new smart phone application by the Colorado Department of Transportation, CDOT Mobile, that should help learn about construction delays on the interstate.   If you have an Apple phone, search for it in the Apple Store.  It’s supposed to give real time information on traffic and driving conditions on the Interstate.  I just put the application on my phone, so I’m interested to see how well it works.
